Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness offers a dramatic contrast to the surrounding Southern California landscape. Rising to 10,834 feet, Mount San Jacinto is the second-highest peak in Southern California, providing a haven of cool, sub-alpine forests, meadows, and granite peaks. The park's history stretches back thousands of years, with the Cahuilla people inhabiting the mountain valleys. In 1897, it was designated a Forest Reserve, and in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built many of the park's original structures, including trails and picnic areas. Today, visitors can explore over 50 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks to challenging climbs. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway offers a unique ascent from the desert floor to the park's mountain station, providing access to Long Valley and various trails. Camping is available at the Idyllwild and Stone Creek campgrounds, as well as in designated wilderness areas. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot mule deer, foxes, mountain lions, and a variety of bird species.
