Discover more about Ryan Mountain

Ryan Mountain, rising to 5,457 feet (1,663 meters), is a prominent peak in the heart of Joshua Tree National Park. Named after the Ryan brothers, early settlers who operated the Lost Horse Mine, the mountain offers a rewarding hiking experience with stunning 360-degree views. The 3-mile round trip trail ascends 1,050 feet (320 m), making it a moderately strenuous hike. The well-maintained path features a combination of stone steps and dirt trails, winding through a landscape dotted with Joshua trees, granite formations, and diverse desert flora. From the summit, hikers can see the Wonderland of Rocks, Pinto Basin, Lost Horse Valley, and the sweeping expanse of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. On a clear day, views extend to Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio, the tallest peak in Southern California, and even as far as Mexico. The mountain's geology is also noteworthy, with ancient granitic rock formed millions of years ago. Keep an eye out for Desert Bighorn Sheep, known to inhabit the area. The Ryan Ranch, established in 1896 by J.D. Ryan, lies at the mountain's base and features the ruins of adobe structures.
