    Getting There

    Driving

From Park Boulevard, the main road in Joshua Tree National Park, turn onto Keys View Road. Drive approximately 20 minutes to the end of the road, where you'll find the Keys View parking lot. The road dead-ends at the parking lot, making it easy to navigate. Park entrance fees apply; a 7-day pass costs $30 per vehicle, or an annual 'America the Beautiful' pass can be purchased for $80.

    Walking

From the parking lot, a short, paved, wheelchair-accessible trail leads to the main viewpoint. The loop trail is approximately 0.25 miles long with a gentle slope. The path between the parking area and the Upper Keys View viewpoint has an elevation gain of 25 feet. The trail offers additional viewing spots and interpretive signs.

    Local tips

Arrive early, especially for sunset, as the parking lot can fill up quickly.
Bring layers, as the elevation makes it cooler and windier than other parts of the park.
Don't forget water and sun protection, as there is little shade.
Bring binoculars for a clearer view of distant landmarks like the Salton Sea and the San Andreas Fault.

    Discover more about Keys View

Keys View, situated at the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, is a renowned scenic spot within Joshua Tree National Park. At an elevation of over 5,000 feet, it provides sweeping views of the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs, and the Salton Sea. On exceptionally clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of Signal Mountain in Mexico, roughly 90 miles to the south. The vista showcases the dramatic contrast between the high desert landscape and the valley below, carved by the San Andreas Fault. Interpretive panels along the paved, wheelchair-accessible trail highlight key geological features and points of interest. Keys View is named after William F. Keys, a colorful character from the area's early settlement. Keys was a rancher, gold miner, and at one point, a convict, whose life story is intertwined with the history of Joshua Tree. While the man himself was controversial, the view named after him is undeniably breathtaking. Sunset is a particularly popular time to visit, as the desert sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant oranges and reds. However, be prepared for cooler temperatures and potential wind due to the high elevation. Even during the day, the exposed location offers little shade, so it's wise to bring water and sun protection. While at Keys View, take the short, paved trail to explore the area and read about the geology of the region. The site is easily accessible and offers a memorable experience for anyone visiting Joshua Tree National Park.
