Oswit Canyon Loop Trail: A Desert Oasis

Discover a serene desert escape on the Oswit Canyon Loop Trail in Palm Springs, offering scenic hikes and a glimpse into the Coachella Valley's natural beauty.

The Oswit Canyon Loop Trail, nestled in the southern reaches of Palm Springs, offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural wonders of the Coachella Valley. This 1.2-mile loop, maintained by the Oswit Land Trust, provides an accessible and rewarding hiking experience for visitors of all skill levels. The trail winds through a landscape of rugged canyons, diverse desert vegetation, and unique geological formations, offering a glimpse into the region's rich biodiversity. The trail is considered a moderate to easy trek, typically completed in under an hour. The path is well-maintained and clearly marked, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. As you hike, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the city of Palm Springs. The trail meanders deeper into the canyon, offering opportunities to explore rocky outcroppings and discover hidden alcoves. For those seeking a longer hike, the Oswit Canyon Loop Trail connects to the South Lykken Trail, which extends further into the mountains. Some sections of the trail branch off towards the mountain. Oswit Canyon's history is deeply intertwined with the efforts of local conservationists. In 2016, when plans arose to develop the area, the Save Oswit Canyon group was formed to protect the canyon from destruction. After a long battle, the Oswit Land Trust purchased the 114 acres of Oswit Canyon in 2020, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, the Oswit Land Trust continues to maintain the trails and protect the canyon's delicate ecosystem. The canyon serves as a habitat for endangered bighorn sheep, desert foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, migratory birds, and raptors. The trail offers little to no shade, so the sun can be intense, especially during summer days. It's best to visit during the cooler months, from October to May. The trail is open from dawn to dusk. Dogs, bikes, e-bikes, motorized vehicles, drones, loud music, picnicking, and smoking are prohibited.

Local tips

  • Visit during the cooler months (October to May) for the most comfortable hiking experience, avoiding the intense summer heat.
  • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate hiking shoes, as the desert environment can be harsh.
  • Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including the endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep, but maintain a safe distance and do not disturb their habitat.
  • Be aware that dogs, bikes, e-bikes, and drones are not allowed on the trail to protect the natural environment and wildlife.
