Broadway San Jose is a premier venue for experiencing Broadway-caliber shows in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is housed within the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, a 2,677-seat theater operated by Team San Jose. Since its debut in 2009 with Spamalot, Broadway San Jose has hosted over 70 shows, becoming a cultural landmark in the city. The San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, originally named the San Jose Community Theatre, opened in 1972. The architect was William Wesley Peters of Taliesin Associated Architects. For 34 years, the venue was the home of the American Musical Theatre of San Jose (AMTSJ), formerly known as the San Jose Civic Light Opera, from 1975 until the company's closure in 2008. In February 2002, AMTSJ partnered with the Nederlander Organization to present touring Broadway shows alongside local productions. The Nederlander Organization, established in 1912, is one of the largest privately held live entertainment companies in the world. It operates historic theaters and produces a variety of theatrical and concert events. Broadway San Jose attracts over 300,000 patrons each season and has close to 10,000 subscribers.
