Discover more about Eaton Canyon Nature Center

Nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Eaton Canyon Nature Center offers a unique blend of natural beauty and educational experiences. As the primary gateway to the 190-acre Eaton Canyon Natural Area, the center provides visitors with an opportunity to connect with the local flora, fauna, and geology. Established in 1977, the nature center has a rich history, evolving from ranching and farming lands to a vital resource for water conservation with the construction of the Eaton Canyon Reservoir in the early 20th century. The original center was rebuilt in 1998 after being destroyed in a 1993 fire. Unfortunately, the center was burned down again in January 2025. Visitors can explore a variety of interactive exhibits, observe live animals, and learn about the diverse ecosystem of the San Gabriel Mountains. The center also provides access to an extensive trail system, with options ranging from easy strolls to more strenuous hikes, including the popular trail to Eaton Canyon Falls. The trails offer opportunities for wildlife watching, with sightings of mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, and various bird species. Eaton Canyon's history is intertwined with the Tongva people, who relied on the canyon's freshwater sources for their village. Later, Spanish settlers named the canyon "El Precipicio" due to its steep gorges. The canyon was eventually named after Judge Benjamin Eaton, who pioneered the use of irrigation from Eaton Creek.
