Originally founded as a private subscription library, it has evolved into a vital public resource. The current Central Library building, designed by architects Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers, opened its doors on Lincoln's birthday, February 12, 1927, as the first building in Pasadena's now-famous Civic Center. The library and the entire Civic Center are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The library's architecture showcases a Mediterranean Revival style, featuring a walled entrance courtyard with a central fountain, red clay tile roofs, and stucco exteriors adorned with cast stone trim. The building has undergone renovations and expansions over the years, including a major restoration between 1984 and 1990. The Pasadena Public Library Foundation contributed significantly to the interior restoration. The Central Library houses a vast collection of books, historical documents, and multimedia resources. The Centennial Room is dedicated to Pasadena's history and culture, featuring books, photographs, and other materials that reflect the city's development. The library also offers various programs and services, including virtual services, accessible technology, and educational programming.
