Discover more about Eaton Canyon Nature Center

Eaton Canyon Nature Center is a gateway to exploring the natural beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains. Located in Pasadena, California, the center provides access to a 190-acre natural area with diverse flora, fauna, and hiking trails. Originally called “El Precipicio” by Spanish settlers due to its steep gorges, the area was later named after Judge Benjamin Eaton, who pioneered irrigation from Eaton Creek. The Nature Center itself was established in 1977. It has a rich history, dating back to the 1800s when the land was used for ranching and farming. In the early 1900s, the Eaton Canyon Reservoir was built to supply water to Pasadena. Visitors can explore various exhibits, including live animal displays, and learn about the local ecosystem. The center's knowledgeable staff offers guided hikes and tours. Popular activities include hiking to Eaton Canyon Falls, a 40-foot waterfall. Several trails cater to different skill levels, from easy strolls to more strenuous climbs. The trails offer opportunities to observe local wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, bobcats, and various bird species. The Nature Center also focuses on environmental stewardship, educating visitors about protecting the canyon's plants and animals. While the Eaton Canyon Nature Center was tragically affected by a fire in January 2025, plans are underway to rebuild and restore this valuable community resource.
