Discover more about Sundial Bridge

The Sundial Bridge, officially named the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay, is a striking landmark in Redding, California. Designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it elegantly spans the Sacramento River, connecting the north and south sections of Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Completed in 2004 at a cost of $23.5 million, the bridge has become an iconic symbol of the city. As a cantilever spar cable-stayed bridge, it is similar in design to Calatrava's earlier Puente del Alamillo in Seville, Spain. The bridge's unique architecture features a 217-foot-high pylon set at a 42-degree angle, creating a dramatic visual statement. The bridge is also a functioning sundial, with its shadow cast upon a dial to mark the time, although it is only accurate on the summer solstice. The bridge is 700 feet long and constructed without any supports in the river, protecting the salmon spawning grounds below. The deck is surfaced with translucent structural glass, which is illuminated at night, creating a beautiful aquamarine glow. The bridge provides access to the Sacramento River Trail, a 35-mile trail perfect for hiking, walking, mountain biking and cycling.
