Discover more about Grizzly Island Wildlife Area

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), lies within the Suisun Marsh, the largest contiguous estuarine marsh in the United States. Encompassing approximately 12,900 acres, Grizzly Island is a mosaic of tidal sloughs, seasonal ponds, and managed wetlands designed to support a rich variety of wildlife. Originally named for the California grizzly bears that once roamed the area, Grizzly Island has a long history of human interaction. Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Patwin and Wintun tribes. In the 19th century, it became a popular hunting and fishing destination. Recognizing the ecological importance of the marsh, the CDFW began acquiring land in the 1930s, establishing one of California's first wildlife refuges. Today, Grizzly Island provides habitat for over 200 bird species, including migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors. The area also supports populations of tule elk, river otters, and other mammals. Visitors can explore the area via 75 miles of roads and trails, with several self-guided hiking trails planned. Popular activities include birdwatching, fishing, and nature viewing. Note that the area is closed to non-hunting uses from late July through early February to accommodate tule elk and waterfowl hunting seasons. Grizzly Island offers a glimpse into a unique ecosystem and a chance to connect with nature. Whether you're an avid birder, a keen angler, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Grizzly Island provides a rewarding experience.
