Discover more about Benicia Capitol State Historic Park

Benicia Capitol State Historic Park offers a unique window into California's early statehood. For a brief period, from February 1853 to February 1854, Benicia served as the state capital, and this park preserves the building where the state legislature convened. The Greek Revival-Palladian structure, originally Benicia City Hall, is the only pre-Sacramento capitol still standing. Dissatisfied with their accommodations in Vallejo, the legislature moved to Benicia. However, complaints about weather, uncomfortable conditions, and concerns over public archive security led to another relocation to Sacramento. Despite its short tenure, the Benicia Capitol played a role in California's formative years, including landmark laws such as allowing women to own property. The park features the restored capitol building with period furnishings, offering visitors a glimpse into the 1850s. The Senate and Assembly chambers have been recreated, complete with desks, newspapers, and other artifacts of the era. Next door, the Fischer-Hanlon House showcases the life of a prominent local family during the Gold Rush era. The house, a renovated hotel, is filled with original furnishings and artifacts. The park also includes a carriage house, workers' quarters, and sculptured gardens. Today, Benicia Capitol State Historic Park is a California State Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers guided tours and hosts events throughout the year, bringing history to life for visitors of all ages.
