Discover more about Jepson Prairie Preserve

Jepson Prairie Preserve offers a captivating glimpse into California's ecological past. Once a widespread feature of the Central Valley, vernal pools are now a rare habitat, and Jepson Prairie stands as one of the best remaining examples. These unique ecosystems form when winter rains collect in shallow depressions with an impermeable clay layer, creating temporary pools that teem with life. Each spring, as the pools evaporate, a spectacular display of wildflowers unfolds, painting the prairie in concentric rings of yellow, white, and blue. This vibrant tapestry is home to over 400 plant species, including 15 rare and endangered varieties. Keep an eye out for the federally threatened delta green ground beetle and the endangered Solano grass, found nowhere else on Earth. Jepson Prairie is not just about plants; it's also a haven for unique aquatic creatures. Vernal pool fairy shrimp, conservancy fairy shrimp, and vernal pool tadpole shrimp thrive in these temporary waters, each adapted to the cycle of flooding and drying. The California tiger salamander, another resident, spends most of its life underground, emerging to breed in the pools. Managed by the Solano Land Trust in partnership with the University of California, Davis, the preserve offers both guided tours and self-guided exploration. Knowledgeable docents lead tours on weekends from mid-March through mid-May, providing insights into the prairie's ecology and its fascinating inhabitants. The self-guided loop trail allows visitors to explore the area at their own pace, offering opportunities for birdwatching and enjoying the expansive vistas. Please remember to stay on marked trails to protect this delicate habitat.
