Discover more about Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach, or O.B. as the locals call it, is a captivating blend of old-school beach town charm and counter-culture energy. Founded in 1887, Ocean Beach was initially named Mussel Beach, but was later renamed by developers Billy Carlson and Albert E. Higgins. They promoted it as a resort destination, complete with an amusement park called Wonderland. Today, O.B. maintains its unique character, resisting the homogenization of chain stores and embracing local businesses. The main attraction is, of course, the beach itself. Ocean Beach offers a wide sandy expanse perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. Dog Beach, located at the north end, is a haven for canine companions to run and play off-leash. The Ocean Beach Pier, currently closed for repairs, is a prominent landmark and a popular spot for fishing and sunset viewing.Beyond the beach, Newport Avenue is the heart of O.B., lined with surf shops, antique stores, taco stands, and microbreweries. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, with its dramatic cliffs and ocean vistas, is a short distance away and provides a stunning backdrop for sunset watching. O.B.'s chill atmosphere and friendly locals make it a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic Southern California beach town experience.
