Originally constructed as the Foreign Liberal Arts Building for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, it was designed by Carleton Monroe Winslow under the supervision of Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, showcasing a Churrigueresque style of Spanish Colonial architecture.In 1935-1936, architect Richard S. Requa significantly remodeled the building for the California-Pacific International Exposition, transforming it into the "House of Hospitality". Requa retained the original facades but added two floors of office and public rooms, along with a Mexican Colonial central courtyard. This renovation included a civic auditorium and a public restaurant with terraced gardens.Today, the House of Hospitality continues to be a central gathering place in Balboa Park. It houses The Prado at Balboa Park, an award-winning restaurant known for its California cuisine and elegant ambiance. The building also offers event spaces for weddings, meetings, and other special occasions. Its central location provides easy access to other park attractions, including museums, gardens, and the iconic California Tower.
