Coronado Public Library: A Community Hub

The Coronado Public Library stands as a beacon of knowledge and community engagement in the heart of Coronado, California. Established in 1890 by the Coronado Library and Free Reading Room Association, it has grown from a modest collection of donated reading materials to a comprehensive resource center.The library's history is intertwined with the development of Coronado itself. In its early days, the library found a home in a rent-free pavilion provided by the Hotel del Coronado, catering to both residents and hotel guests. In 1909, John D. Spreckels, owner of the Hotel del Coronado, commissioned architect Harrison Albright to design a permanent library building in the classical revival style. This original building, constructed of reinforced concrete, still stands as the Spreckels Reading Room within the modern library.Over the years, the library has expanded to meet the evolving needs of the community. A major renovation in 2005, designed by MW Steele Group, added 15,500 square feet of space and restored the original Spreckels building to its former glory. Today, the library boasts a vast collection of books, periodicals, and multimedia resources, as well as dedicated spaces for children and teens.The Coronado Public Library is more than just a repository of books; it's a vibrant center for cultural enrichment. The library hosts a wide array of events, including book clubs, lectures, concerts, and art exhibitions. The Friends of the Coronado Public Library actively support these programs through fundraising activities and community outreach. The library also offers free Wi-Fi and computer access, making it a valuable resource for travelers and residents alike.
