Jack Early Park: A Telegraph Hill Hideaway

Jack Early Park, a true hidden gem in San Francisco, offers a unique and tranquil escape high on Telegraph Hill. This small park, created in the 1960s by Telegraph Hill resident Jack Early, provides breathtaking panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, including Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Bay Bridge. Jack Early, an advertising man, transformed an unused, rocky slope into his personal park, planting eucalyptus and Monterey cypress trees. He built a staircase using donated railroad ties and added a bench at the top, creating a serene spot to enjoy the view. In 1987, after 25 years of dedicated work, the city officially dedicated the park in his name. The park is accessible via a staircase located off Grant Avenue. The climb, though short, offers a unique experience as you ascend past charming houses with classic architectural details. The park itself is small, offering an intimate setting with limited space. At the top, you'll find a bench where you can relax and soak in the stunning scenery. The sound of sea lions from Fisherman's Wharf can often be heard, adding to the park's unique ambiance.
