Jack Early Park, a true hidden gem in San Francisco, is far from your typical sprawling park. Perched on Telegraph Hill, this minuscule park offers breathtaking views of the city and bay. The park's story began in the 1960s when Telegraph Hill resident Jack Early saw potential in an unused, rocky slope owned by the city.
Early transformed the space, planting eucalyptus and Monterey cypress trees and constructing a staircase using donated railroad ties. He even carried water up the stairs to nourish the plants. At the summit, he placed two benches, creating an intimate viewing area. For over 25 years, Early dedicated himself to this project, and in 1987, the city officially recognized his efforts, naming the park in his honor.
Today, visitors can ascend the stairway to enjoy panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, and Fisherman's Wharf. The park is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m..

Walking
From Fisherman's Wharf, walk east along Jefferson Street, then turn left onto Taylor Street. Continue onto Francisco Street and turn right onto Grant Avenue. Look for the unassuming staircase entrance to Jack Early Park on the right, across from Pfeiffer Street. The climb up the stairs takes only a few minutes.
Public Transport
From downtown San Francisco, take the F-Line streetcar to Fisherman's Wharf. Then, follow the walking directions from Fisherman's Wharf to Jack Early Park. A single ride on Muni, including the F-Line, costs $3.00 and is valid for 90 minutes.
