Discover more about SS Jeremiah O'Brien

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, a proud Liberty ship, offers a unique glimpse into the maritime history of World War II. Docked at Pier 35 in San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, this fully operational vessel stands as a testament to the brave men and women who built, sailed, and defended these vital cargo ships. Built in just 56 days in 1943, the Jeremiah O'Brien served in the European Theater of Operations, making four round-trip convoy crossings of the Atlantic. As part of the D-Day invasion fleet, she made eleven cross-channel trips, carrying essential personnel and supplies to support the Allied forces in Normandy. Of the 2,710 Liberty ships built during the war, the Jeremiah O'Brien is one of only two remaining operational ships. Visitors can explore the ship's decks, engine room, radio room, and bridge, gaining insight into the daily lives of the Merchant Marines and Navy personnel who served on board. The lower deck houses a museum with exhibits detailing the history of the Jeremiah O'Brien and its missions, as well as information about other ships and operations during World War II. The ship is not ADA-accessible, and visitors must be able to climb steep steps to access the main deck. The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is more than just a museum; it's a living memorial to the vital role Liberty ships played in securing Allied victory during World War II.
