    Discover more about Sutro Heights

Sutro Heights Park, located in the Outer Richmond District, is a historic public park with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Ocean Beach, and the Marin Headlands. This 18-acre park was once the site of Adolph Sutro's estate, a Comstock Lode silver baron and former mayor of San Francisco. In 1881, Sutro purchased the land and built a mansion with elaborate gardens, which he opened to the public in 1885. Inspired by European aesthetics, Sutro filled the gardens with fountains, flower beds, hedge mazes, and over 200 concrete replicas of Greek and Roman statues. Visitors could stroll along wide walkways and enjoy vista points like the observation plaza overlooking the Cliff House and the Dolce far Niente Balcony overlooking Ocean Beach. After Sutro's death, his daughter maintained the gardens until 1938 when the family donated the estate to the City of San Francisco. The mansion was demolished in 1939, and the park was later transferred to the National Park Service and became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Today, visitors can still see the iconic lion statues at the entrance, remnants of the original statuary, and the Well House, a small Victorian structure. Sutro Heights Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a must-see destination in San Francisco.
