The de Young Museum, officially the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, has been a cultural cornerstone of San Francisco since its opening in 1895. Originating as the Fine Arts Building for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894, the museum was later named in honor of Michael H. de Young, a co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle. The museum's collections span a wide range of art from around the world. American art from the 17th through the 21st centuries forms a core component, complemented by significant collections of textiles and costumes, and art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Visitors can explore works ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary masterpieces. The de Young is also known for its special exhibitions, which feature innovative works from respected artists. The de Young's current building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opened in October 2005. Its copper-clad exterior has become an iconic part of the Golden Gate Park landscape. A key feature is the Hamon Observation Tower, offering visitors panoramic views of San Francisco and the surrounding area. The Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden, located behind the museum, provides a space to view unique and creative pieces of art.
