    Discover more about Baker Beach

Baker Beach, a scenic mile-long stretch of sand in the Presidio of San Francisco, provides iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the beach offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Originally part of a military base dating back to the Spanish founding of San Francisco in 1812, Baker Beach was fortified in 1904 with Battery Chamberlin, a disappearing gun installation. Although the guns were never used in combat, visitors can still view a restored disappearing gun and learn about the coastal defense system. Baker Beach is a popular destination for various activities. Many come to sunbathe, picnic, and grill, taking advantage of the available picnic tables and BBQ grills. The beach is also dog-friendly, with off-leash areas north of Lobos Creek. For those interested in hiking, the beach provides access to the California Coastal Trail and other trails with scenic views. From 1986 to 1990, Baker Beach was the original home of the Burning Man art festival. The event has since moved to Nevada's Black Rock Desert, but its origins remain a part of the beach's history. While swimming is discouraged due to strong currents and cold water temperatures, Baker Beach remains a beloved spot for its views, recreational opportunities, and connection to San Francisco's history.
