Discover more about Cheeseboro & Palo Comado Canyon

Cheeseboro & Palo Comado Canyons, located in the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, encompass over 4,000 acres of natural beauty in the Simi Hills. These canyons, older than the Santa Monica Mountains, offer a diverse terrain of gently rounded hills, oak-filled valleys, and grasslands. For over 150 years, ranchers called these canyons home, leaving a lasting impact on the landscape. While cattle grazing altered the native plant life, the area still boasts chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and riparian woodlands. Today, the park provides a habitat for a variety of wildlife, including deer, bobcats, coyotes, rabbits, owls, hawks, and other raptors. Visitors can explore a variety of trails suited for different activities and skill levels. Hike to the top of Simi Peak for panoramic views, stroll to Sulphur Springs to experience its unique aroma, or enjoy a leisurely picnic. The canyons are popular among hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, with trails connecting to other areas like Wood Ranch and Lang Ranch. Cheeseboro Canyon is known for some of the best cycling and running trails in the area. The Cheeseboro Canyon Trail is a 4.6-mile fairly easygoing main artery into the park, whereas the 4.4 mile Palo Comado Canyon Trail is much more challenging.
