History of Santa Clarita

Long before European settlers arrived, the Santa Clarita Valley was home to the Tataviam people. This indigenous group thrived in the region, hunting game and gathering native plants. Their influence is still evident in the area's place names and archaeological sites.
In the late 18th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the region. The establishment of the Mission San Fernando Rey de España in 1797 marked the beginning of significant European influence. The mission system aimed to convert the local Native American population to Christianity and integrate them into Spanish colonial society.
