Discover more about Southern Pacific 1293

Southern Pacific 1293 stands as a monument to Tracy's rich railroad past. This S-14 class 0-6-0 steam locomotive was built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1924 and served the Southern Pacific Railroad for over three decades. These locomotives were primarily used for switching duties in rail yards. Retired in 1957, SP 1293 was donated to the City of Tracy in 1958 and placed on display in Dr. Powers Park. The locomotive serves as a reminder of the city's importance as a railroad center, particularly after the Southern Pacific established a new line through Tracy in 1878, leading to the town's rapid growth. While time and weather have taken their toll, with some deterioration due to exposure, the Southern Pacific 1293 remains a tangible link to Tracy's formative years. It evokes a sense of nostalgia for the age of steam and the vital role railroads played in connecting communities and driving economic development.
