Originally established as the plaza mayor of the Spanish Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, it has served as a focal point for the city for over two centuries. In 1993, the plaza was rededicated in honor of Cesar Chavez, the renowned California civil rights activist and labor leader. This renaming reflects San Jose's commitment to honoring individuals who have contributed significantly to social justice and equality. Chavez even had an office nearby with his United Farm Workers union. Today, Plaza de Cesar Chavez is surrounded by prominent San Jose institutions and landmarks. These include The Tech Interactive, the San Jose Museum of Art, City National Civic, and St. Joseph's Cathedral Basilica. The plaza itself hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the San Jose Jazz Festival, Music in the Park, and Christmas in the Park. The park features a permanent stage, grassy areas, artesian fountains, and the Quetzalcoatl serpent sculpture by Robert Graham. From 1849 to 1851, the plaza was the site of California's first state capitol. San Jose's City Hall occupied the center of the park from 1889 to 1958.
