Discover more about Baker Beach

Baker Beach, a mile-long stretch of sand in the Presidio, provides iconic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands, and the Pacific Ocean. This public beach, located on the city's west side, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Originally named Baker's Beach in 1866 after the Baker family who owned a dairy farm in the area, the beach has a rich history. From the founding of San Francisco by the Spanish in 1812, the Presidio served as a military base until 1997. In 1904, the U.S. Army fortified Baker Beach with Battery Chamberlin, a disappearing gun installation that can still be viewed today. Baker Beach was also the original location of the Burning Man art festival from 1986 to 1990. Today, visitors can enjoy picnicking, sunbathing, and hiking along the coastal trails. The northern section of the beach is known for clothing-optional sunbathing. Keep an eye out for harbor porpoises playing in the surf.
