Discover more about Walnut Creek Open Space

Walnut Creek Open Space is a collection of preserved natural areas encompassing over 3,000 acres across four main sections: Shell Ridge, Lime Ridge, Acalanes Ridge, and Sugarloaf. These open spaces offer a diverse landscape of rolling hills, oak woodlands, and grassland savannahs, providing a vital habitat for local wildlife and a recreational escape for residents and visitors. In the early 1970s, as developers eyed the hills for new housing, local activists rallied to preserve these undeveloped lands. A grassroots movement led to a bond measure in 1974, where Walnut Creek voters agreed to tax themselves to purchase and protect over 2,700 acres of open space. This commitment ensured that these lands would remain in a near-natural state for future generations. Today, Walnut Creek Open Space boasts over 65 miles of trails for hiking, walking, running, bicycling, and equestrian use. Shell Ridge, the largest parcel, spans 1,420 acres with 31 miles of trails, connecting to Mount Diablo State Park. Lime Ridge, with its 1,226 acres and 25 miles of trails, features a history of limestone quarrying from 1905 to 1946. Acalanes Ridge offers 201 acres and 4 miles of trails, with its peak marked by concrete arrows once used by the Transcontinental Airway System. Sugarloaf, at 177 acres, provides 3 miles of trails, black walnut orchards, and views of Mount Diablo. Visitors can explore historical sites like Borges Ranch, a late 19th-century cattle ranch, and Howe Homestead Park. Picnic areas and group camping sites are available for reservation, making it an ideal destination for family outings and group events. Whether seeking a challenging hike or a peaceful stroll, Walnut Creek Open Space offers a natural retreat for all to enjoy.
