Discover more about Joaquin Miller Abbey

Joaquin Miller Abbey, located in Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland Hills, provides a unique opportunity to explore the world of the celebrated poet Joaquin Miller. Miller, born Cincinnatus Hiner Miller, was a colorful figure who led an adventurous life before settling in Oakland. He was a miner, Pony Express rider, and lived among Native American tribes, all of which shaped his writing. In 1886, Miller purchased 100 acres of land in the Oakland Hills, which he called 'The Hights'. Here, he built his home, The Abbey, a simple yet distinctive structure that reflected his unconventional spirit. The Abbey is a three-part frame building with a gable roof, exhibiting a vaguely Gothic Revival style. Originally a single small room with a porch, Miller later expanded it to accommodate his mother and daughter. The interior was adorned with hides, bear claws, Native American weapons, and photographs. Beyond the Abbey, Miller transformed 'The Hights' into an inspirational artists' retreat. He planted an estimated 75,000 trees, including Monterey pines, Monterey cypresses, olive trees, and eucalyptus, creating a lush landscape. He also erected monuments dedicated to historical figures he admired, such as Moses, Robert Browning, and John C. Frémont. One notable monument is Miller's own funeral pyre, which was never used. After Miller's death in 1913, the City of Oakland purchased 'The Hights' in 1919, preserving it as a public park and historical landmark.
