Discover more about El Capitan

El Capitan, also known as El Cap, is a breathtaking vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, California. Rising approximately 3,000 feet (914 meters) from base to summit, it stands as a world-renowned mecca for big wall climbing. Its name, Spanish for 'The Captain' or 'The Chief', reflects its commanding presence at the west end of Yosemite Valley. Formed over millions of years, El Capitan's granite composition showcases the Earth's geological history. Originally formed deep within the Earth's crust from cooling magma, uplift and erosion gradually exposed the monolith. Glaciers then sculpted the valley, leaving El Capitan as a prominent feature. El Capitan is composed of El Capitan Granite, known for its exceptional strength and durability. This has made it a favorite amongst rock climbers. The rock face presents a formidable challenge because of its technical difficulties, including cracks, ledges, and overhangs. The most famous climbing route is 'The Nose'. It was first climbed in 1958 and remains a popular, challenging route for climbers of all levels. For non-climbers, El Capitan offers incredible views and photo opportunities. El Capitan Meadow provides an unobstructed view of the monolith and Cathedral Rocks. Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall area, and the banks of the Merced River also offer stunning perspectives. Hiking to the top of El Capitan is possible via a strenuous 17-mile trail.
