Phnom Santuk: A Sacred Mountain Pilgrimage

Phnom Santuk, a 207-meter hill in Kampong Thom province, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance as the province's most sacred mountain. For centuries, it has been a popular pilgrimage destination for locals and tourists alike. The mountain's history stretches back before the Angkorian era, with legends suggesting its sacredness dates to the Hindu period. One story recounts King Thommo Reachea I transferring Buddha relics to a village near the mountain in the 15th century. Wat Phnom Santuk, constructed in the 7th century, stands as one of Cambodia's oldest temples, marking the mountain as a prominent center of Khmer culture and religion. To reach the summit, visitors can ascend 809 colorful steps flanked by statues or take a 2.5km paved road. Along the path, discover Brahmanic carvings and, at the summit, a white temple with shrines and deities. The most imposing figure is a 10-meter-long reclining Buddha carved into the rock. Other key features include Prasat Touch, a three-tiered sandstone sanctuary, and Preah Bat Chann, a statue of Tuk surrounded by smaller sculptures. Phnom Santuk offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, including the Ko Kos village plains, the Tonle Sap River, and rice paddies. The site is also home to monks who welcome foreign visitors. Phnom Santuk is known by several names throughout history, including Phnom Thom, Phnom Arth Santuk, Phnom Chorm Chong Kiri, Phnom Krop Tuk, and Phnom Preah Bat Chann Tuk.
