Discover more about Independence Monument

The Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach) stands proudly at the heart of Phnom Penh, serving as a powerful reminder of Cambodia's liberation from French colonial rule in 1953. Erected in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962, this striking monument was designed by the influential Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann, under the personal guidance of Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Molyvann, one of Cambodia's first qualified architects, also designed other significant buildings during the 1960s and 1970s, including the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh. The monument's design draws inspiration from the lotus-shaped stupas of Angkor Wat and other ancient Khmer temples. Rising 20 meters (approximately 62 feet) tall, the reddish-brown stone structure features five levels adorned with multi-headed nagas (serpents), a common motif in Khmer art and culture. One hundred dragon heads complete its summit. Located at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard, the Independence Monument is a focal point for national celebrations and a popular attraction for tourists. Every year on November 9th, Independence Day, government officials and citizens gather here to commemorate the nation's freedom. The King ceremoniously lights the 'Glory Torch' inside the monument, and colorful balloons are released into the sky. The monument also serves as a memorial to Cambodia's war dead, with wreaths laid here on national holidays. In the evenings, the monument is illuminated with blue, red, and white floodlights, representing the colors of the Cambodian flag, creating a captivating spectacle. The surrounding park provides a pleasant space for walking and offers excellent vantage points for viewing the monument. Nearby attractions include the statue of King Norodom Sihanouk, Wat Lanka, and Wat Botum.
