Wat Hanchey, also known as Hanchey Temple, is a historical and religious site in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. The temple is situated on a hilltop, approximately 20 km north of Kampong Cham city, offering stunning views of the Mekong River and the surrounding landscape. The temple complex has a rich history, with its oldest structures dating back to the Chenla Empire between the 7th and 8th centuries. During this period, it served as an important place of worship, with Khmer people believing that Mountain Meru, the home of Hindu gods, was located there. Over the centuries, Wat Hanchey has been influenced by both Hinduism and Buddhism, with temples dedicated to both religions. The complex features ancient temples and ruins, including a red-bricked stupa from the Chenla era. The temple grounds also house a large reclining Buddha statue and various smaller Buddha statues and carvings. Visitors can explore the ancient brick sanctuary with well-preserved inscriptions in ancient Sanskrit. Today, Wat Hanchey is home to many young Cambodian monks who reside within the temple walls, studying, training, and praying. Visitors have the opportunity to witness the daily life of the monks and receive a traditional water blessing. Reaching the temple requires climbing approximately 300 steps, which is considered a good way to improve your health and enjoy the beauty of nature. Wat Hanchey offers a serene and authentic experience, away from the crowds, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Cambodia's culture and history.
