Prasat Beng Mealea, Kampong Thom Travel Guide

Prasat Beng Mealea, meaning 'lotus pond' , is an Angkor Wat-style temple constructed in the early 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II. Located approximately 40 km east of the main Angkor complex and 67 km from Siem Reap , it lies on the ancient royal highway to Preah Khan Kompong Svay. Often called the 'Jungle Temple' , Beng Mealea offers a unique experience as nature has largely taken over.Built primarily of sandstone , the temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, though some Buddhist carvings are also present. Historians believe Beng Mealea may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat due to its similar layout and design. The temple complex is surrounded by a large moat, measuring 1.2 km by 900 m. The outer enclosure measures 152 by 181 meters. Three enclosing galleries surround a central sanctuary, which has collapsed. Libraries are located to the right and left of the avenue that leads in from the east.Rediscovered by French explorers in the late 19th century , Beng Mealea was abandoned in the 16th century. The temple was part of a Khmer Rouge stronghold during the civil war, making it dangerous to visit until recent demining efforts. Today, visitors can explore the unrestored ruins, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst the towers and courtyards. The site offers an adventurous experience, navigating over fallen stones and through vine-covered corridors. Carvings of Hindu mythological scenes, including the Churning of the Sea of Milk, can be found among the ruins.
