Discover more about Chisor Mountain Temple

Phnom Chisor Temple, also known as Prasat Phnom Chisor, is a captivating historical site built in the 11th century during the reign of King Suryavarman I. The temple, originally named Sri Suryaparvata, meaning 'the mountain of the sun,' was dedicated to the Hindu deities Shiva and Vishnu. Constructed from laterite and bricks with carved sandstone lintels, the temple measures 60 meters long and 50 meters wide. Ascend the mountain via a staircase, traditionally the west side with 390 steps, to reach the temple. The climb is considered somewhat challenging but rewarding, with stunning views from the summit. The temple complex includes two galleries, with the main worship site in the central gallery. Admire the intricate carvings on the lintels and pillars, showcasing Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu. Explore the Vimean Chan cave, located 150 meters south of the temple, a site once used for meditation by Brahmans and ascetics. Note that the site was bombed during the Vietnam-U.S. war, with rocks now blocking the cave entrance. From the temple, enjoy panoramic views of the Takeo Province, including the Bassac rice fields and Phnom Da to the south.
