Phnom Kraom: Hilltop Temple with Panoramic Views

Phnom Kraom, also known as Prasat Phnom Krom, is a captivating hilltop temple dating back to the late 9th century, during the reign of King Yasovarman I. Located approximately 12 kilometers south of Siem Reap, near Tonle Sap Lake, the temple offers visitors a unique blend of historical significance and breathtaking scenery. The temple complex features three sandstone towers, each dedicated to a different Hindu deity: Shiva (central tower), Vishnu (northern tower), and Brahma (southern tower). These towers, constructed on a common platform, showcase the architectural style of the Bakheng era, characterized by intricate carvings and laterite rock enclosures. Although time and climate have eroded many of the original details, remnants of the elaborate decorations can still be observed. Local legends intertwine with the temple's history, adding to its mystique. One such legend speaks of the monkey warrior Hanuman, who, in the epic Ramayana, exposed the hill's rocks while transporting a mountain of medicinal herbs.
