Place du Gouvernement, situated in Douala's Bonanjo area, is a key site representing the city's governance and historical evolution. The building's architecture showcases a blend of colonial-era design and contemporary Cameroonian elements. Built in 1891 in a Prussian style by architect Otto Wilhelm Scharenberg, it initially served as the German administrative headquarters in Cameroon from 1891 to 1901. The headquarters then moved to Buea and later returned to Douala in 1908 following a Mount Cameroon eruption.During the French mandate, the capital shifted to Yaoundé in 1921, and the building was occupied by the High Commissioner. Today, it houses the sub-prefecture of Douala's 1st arrondissement. The site provides insights into Douala's political activities and governance.
