Getting There

• Walking

  From the center of Ngaoundéré, head towards the main market area (Marché Central). Once you reach the market, ask for directions to the bus station (Gare Routière). This is a common reference point for locals. At the bus station, look for a 'bush taxi' heading to Balam. The fare is typically around 500-1000 CFA. Confirm with the driver that they are heading to Balam. The journey should take approximately 30-45 minutes. Once you arrive in Balam, disembark at the central square. From there, you can ask locals for directions to Lac Mballang, which is located nearby at the coordinates 7.3234907, 13.7388912. It is advisable to follow a local guide or walk in a group for safety.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer cycling, rent a bicycle from one of the rental shops in Ngaoundéré. Start from the main square and head towards the main road leading out of town towards Balam. The route is approximately 15 km and should take about 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Ensure you have a map or GPS since the path may not be well-marked. Upon reaching Balam, you can ask locals for the best route to Lac Mballang. The lake is a short ride from the center of Balam.

• Motorcycle Taxi (Okada)

  In Ngaoundéré, motorcycle taxis (known locally as Okadas) are a quick option. Find a motorcycle taxi near the main market or ask at your accommodation. Negotiate the fare to Balam, which should be around 1000-2000 CFA. The ride will take about 20-30 minutes. Once you arrive in Balam, ask the motorcycle taxi driver if they can take you directly to Lac Mballang, or ask for directions from locals if they cannot. Ensure you wear a helmet for safety.
