Nestled in the Quartier du Lac of Yaoundé, the National Museum serves as a cultural hub, preserving and presenting Cameroon's artistic and historical treasures. Established in 1972, the museum is located in the former presidential palace, a building with German colonial architecture that is over 130 years old. This historic site was assigned to the National Museum on November 17, 1988. The museum underwent a nearly six-year refurbishment and reopened in January 2015, giving new life to the 5,000 m2 area. The museum's extensive collections represent Cameroon's diverse ethnic groups and historical periods. Visitors can explore various galleries housing a wide array of exhibits, including traditional masks, sculptures, textiles, and musical instruments. The museum also provides insights into Cameroon's colonial history, offering a balanced perspective that enriches the visitor's experience. The building itself blends traditional Cameroonian design elements with modern functionality. The museum also hosts workshops and cultural events. Visitors can find artifacts from the four cultural regions of Cameroon: Grassfields, Sawa, Soudano-Sahelian, and Fang-Beti. The first floor presents the modern history of Cameroon and Yaoundé with various objects of arts and crafts. The museum also features bronze statues in the front yard that pay tribute to the Bamoun people.
