Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, or Peggys Point Lighthouse, stands as a beacon and a testament to Nova Scotia's rich maritime history. Located in the small fishing village of Peggy's Cove, the lighthouse marks the eastern entrance to St. Margaret's Bay.The first lighthouse at Peggy's Cove was built in 1868; it was a wooden house with a beacon on the roof. In 1915, it was replaced with the current structure: an octagonal lighthouse made of reinforced concrete. The lighthouse stands almost 15 metres (49 ft) high. For many years, the keeper's dwelling remained nearby, as did a tall flagpole used to warn of approaching bad weather. The lighthouse was automated in 1958.Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several changes, including alterations to the light's color. In 2007, the light was changed to red to conform to world standards. The lighthouse once housed a small Canada Post office, but it closed in 2009 due to mold growth. In 2021, a new accessible viewing platform was opened near the lighthouse to improve accessibility and discourage visitors from venturing onto the dangerous rocks.Peggy's Cove itself is a charming village with houses perched along a narrow inlet and on wave-washed boulders facing the Atlantic. The village was founded in 1811, and its residents have traditionally made their living from fishing. Today, Peggy's Cove is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire the lighthouse, the rugged coastline, and the village's unique character.Visitors can explore the village, hike in the nearby Peggy's Cove Preservation Area, and dine at local restaurants.
