Discover more about Ferryland Lighthouse

Perched on a dramatic headland, the Ferryland Head Lighthouse has guided sailors along Newfoundland's coast since 1871. The 14-meter-tall cylindrical tower, originally constructed of brick and later encased in iron, is painted red with a white lantern and gallery. The lighthouse is a testament to the region's maritime heritage, with plaques recounting stories of shipwrecks that occurred offshore. Beyond its historical significance, the lighthouse offers stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy the coastal scenery, and watch for whales and seabirds. The lighthouse is also home to Lighthouse Picnics, a unique venture offering gourmet picnic baskets to enjoy on the headland. Jill Curran and Sonia Hearn, friends with Newfoundland roots, launched Lighthouse Picnics in 2003, revitalizing the abandoned keeper's dwelling and offering a memorable experience combining history, culture, and local cuisine. The journey to the lighthouse is itself a treat, with a scenic walk along a gravel trail from the Colony of Avalon. The area is rich in history, as Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, founded a colony in Ferryland in 1621. Today, Ferryland is known as the 'Irish Heart of Newfoundland and Labrador,' with strong Irish traditions and culture.
