Discover more about Fort Waldegrave

Perched on the slopes of Signal Hill, Fort Waldegrave is more than just a collection of old stones; it's a window into Newfoundland's rich military heritage. Originally constructed in 1798 on the site of the Old North Castle, the fort was named after Governor Waldegrave and played a crucial role in supporting the Chain Rock battery. Strategically positioned, Fort Waldegrave overlooked the Narrows, the narrow entrance to St. John's harbor. Along with Fort Amherst on the opposite shore, it formed a defensive line, safeguarding the harbor from enemy ships. During the day, a chain could be stretched between Chain Rock and Pancake Rock to block the passage. Throughout its history, Fort Waldegrave has been re-purposed. During World War I, it was reactivated as the sole active defense site for St. John's. Today, visitors can explore the site, soak in the breathtaking views, and read the informative plaques detailing the fort's history. It's a peaceful escape from the city, offering a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty.
