Mid-Canada Line Site 500, located in Kenora, Ontario, offers a glimpse into Canada's Cold War past. Built in the mid-1950s, the site was part of a network of radar stations designed to detect potential Soviet bomber attacks. Known as the McGill Fence, the Mid-Canada Line (MCL) aimed to provide early warning and supplement the Pinetree Line further south. Site 500 was a Sector Control Station, one of eight along the MCL, supporting approximately 90 unmanned Doppler radar sites. These stations used the Doppler effect to detect aircraft, sending signals between transmitters and receivers. The site included various facilities such as a gymnasium, mess hall, barracks, and an operations building. Although operational for a brief period from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, the MCL became obsolete with the advent of ICBMs. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the radar domes and communication facilities, gaining insight into the strategic military operations that once took place. The site serves as a reminder of the tensions of the Cold War era, set against the backdrop of Northern Ontario's forests and lakes.
