Discover more about The Biosphere, Environment Museum

The Montreal Biosphere, easily recognizable by its geodesic dome, is more than just a stunning architectural landmark; it's a museum dedicated to raising awareness about pressing environmental concerns. Designed by the renowned architect Buckminster Fuller, it was initially the United States pavilion for the 1967 World Fair, Expo 67. The Biosphere has since become a symbol of social innovation and human inventiveness.Constructed with a framework of steel tubes forming a geodesic dome, the structure stands 62 meters high and 76 meters in diameter. The original design featured an acrylic skin to control the internal temperature, but a fire in 1976 destroyed this outer layer. The remaining skeletal structure was repurposed, and in 1995, the Biosphere reopened as an environment museum.Today, the Biosphere offers a range of interactive exhibits and activities that explore topics such as water ecosystems, climate change, air quality, and sustainable development. Permanent exhibitions include Spaceship Earth, dedicated to Buckminster Fuller, and Ecolab, an interactive environmental science lab. The museum's location within Parc Jean-Drapeau provides a unique setting, offering breathtaking views of downtown Montreal and the St. Lawrence River. The Biosphere is part of the Espace pour la vie museum network since 2021, which also includes the Biodome, the Jardin botanique, the Insectarium and the Planétarium.Visitors can engage with exhibits, participate in educational programs, and learn about solutions for a more sustainable future. The Biosphere also hosts temporary art installations and exhibitions that further explore the relationship between society and the environment.
