Phare Cap-d'Espoir: A Gaspésie Icon

Perched on the edge of the Gaspé Peninsula, the Phare Cap-d'Espoir stands as a testament to the region's rich maritime history. Located in Cap-d'Espoir, south of Percé, this lighthouse has been a guiding light for sailors navigating the Gulf of St. Lawrence since the late 19th century.The original lighthouse, a wooden structure, was built in 1873 as part of an effort to improve navigational safety in the Gulf. As maritime traffic increased, a sturdier, more modern lighthouse was needed. In 1939, the current reinforced concrete lighthouse was erected. This octagonal tower, painted in distinctive red and white, stands 14 meters tall and continues to operate as an active aid to navigation. The light emits four white flashes every minute and is visible for 17 nautical miles.Visitors to Phare Cap-d'Espoir can appreciate the lighthouse's architecture and explore the surrounding coastal scenery. The site offers panoramic views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Bonaventure Island. While the lighthouse itself is not typically open to the public, the grounds provide a tranquil setting to reflect on the area's maritime heritage.
