Getting there

Public Transport

The Dr. José Rizal Monument is accessible via York Region Transit (YRT). Several bus routes stop near the monument. From major transit hubs like Union Station in Toronto, take the GO Train to Markham GO Station, then transfer to a YRT bus. Bus routes 1, 2, 9, 14 and 305 have stops close to the monument. A single YRT fare is approximately $4.00, payable by Presto card or cash.

Walking

If you are near Boxgrove Community Park, the monument is easily accessible by foot. From the intersection of Box Grove Bypass and Copper Creek Drive, walk southwest on Box Grove Bypass, then turn right onto Rizal Avenue. The monument will be on your left within Luneta Gardens. The walk is less than 10 minutes and free of charge.

Driving

If driving, navigate to Boxgrove Community Park at 7755 Box Grove Bypass, Markham. Limited parking is available in the park. Additional parking may be found on nearby streets. Be aware of parking regulations and time limits. Parking is typically free in the park, but check posted signs for any restrictions.

The Dr. José Rizal Monument in Markham is a prominent landmark honoring Dr. José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines. Unveiled on June 12, 2019, the monument is a collaborative project between the Filipino Canadian community of Markham and the City of Markham, celebrating Philippine heritage and Canada's multicultural values.Created by artist Mogi Mogado, the cold cast bronze monument stands over six feet tall on a seven-foot granite pedestal. The monument is strategically positioned across from Rizal Avenue, symbolizing the integration of Filipino culture within the Markham community. The surrounding Luneta Gardens provide a space for reflection and community gatherings.Dr. José Rizal was a multifaceted individual: a medical doctor, teacher, farmer, author, poet, and political reformer. He advocated for democracy, freedom, equality, and universal brotherhood. The monument serves as a reminder of these values, inspiring generations of freedom fighters and promoting multiculturalism in Canada. The monument is one of several tributes to Rizal across Canada, including monuments in Montreal, Winnipeg, Airdrie, and Toronto.
