The Haliburton Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) stands as a dedicated guardian of the region's natural landscapes, working tirelessly to preserve the unique biodiversity and ecological integrity of Haliburton County. Established in 2005, the HHLT has become a cornerstone of local conservation efforts, driven by a passion for protecting the land and water resources that define this beautiful area.The Land Trust's mission is multifaceted, encompassing land acquisition and protection, stewardship of existing natural areas, and education and outreach to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of conservation. The HHLT actively seeks to identify and safeguard significant lands and waters, recognizing their intrinsic value and the vital role they play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.Currently, the HHLT owns, manages, and protects five properties, encompassing approximately 1,200 acres of diverse habitats, including forests, wetlands, and open areas. Among these protected areas are the Barnum Creek Nature Reserve and the Dahl Forest, both of which are open to the public and offer extensive networks of hiking trails for nature enthusiasts to explore.Barnum Creek Nature Reserve, acquired in 2018, features 7 km of trails through forests, fields and along Barnum Creek. Dahl Forest, donated in 2009, encompasses 500 acres bisected by the Burnt River, with 5 km of trails. These reserves provide opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing, bird watching, and other low-impact recreational activities, allowing visitors to connect with nature while respecting the delicate balance of the environment.The HHLT also plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable land stewardship practices among private landowners, encouraging responsible management of natural resources throughout the region.
