Discover more about Grand Parade

The Grand Parade, established in 1749, stands as Halifax's oldest public space and a significant historical landmark. Originally a military parade square, it has evolved into the city's central civic space, hosting diverse events from musical performances and political demonstrations to annual New Year's Eve celebrations and Remembrance Day ceremonies.Located in the heart of downtown Halifax, the Grand Parade is framed by Halifax City Hall to the north and St. Paul's Church, the oldest building in Halifax, to the south. The square's focal point is the Cenotaph, erected in 1929 to honor the Haligonians who died in World War I and later rededicated to include those who served in the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Afghanistan Conflict. The bronze sculpture on the cenotaph depicts a victorious but grieving Britannia, symbolizing Nova Scotian motherhood.Throughout its history, the Grand Parade has been a witness to significant events, including the establishment of Halifax by British settlers and the Occupy Nova Scotia protest. Today, it remains a vibrant gathering place, easily accessible to residents and visitors alike, and continues to play a vital role in Halifax's social, cultural, and political life.
