Halifax Explosion Memorial Bell Tower: A Tribute to Resilience

The Halifax Explosion Memorial Bell Tower, completed in 1985, serves as a permanent memorial to the victims and survivors of the Halifax Explosion, which occurred on December 6, 1917. This maritime disaster resulted from the collision of two ships in the Halifax Harbour, claiming nearly 2,000 lives and leaving thousands more maimed, blinded, or without shelter. The tower houses a carillon of fourteen bells, with the original ten bells donated by Barbara Orr, who lost her family in the explosion. The tower's design, created by Keith Graham, features a narrow, angular construction that rises to 60 feet, with a steep slope and a cut-through, symbolizing rebirth and the past. The structure is made of hydro-stone, a material used extensively in rebuilding the city's north end after the explosion.Located in Fort Needham Memorial Park, the bell tower provides stunning views of the city and harbor. The park itself was established in the 1950s as a public space for remembrance and underwent a major revitalization in 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the explosion. Visitors can explore the surrounding gardens, read informative plaques, and reflect on the resilience of the Halifax community. The bells are electrified and can be played remotely. The park also features a playground, sports field, trails and an off-leash dog area.
