    Discover more about Dufferin Terrace

Dufferin Terrace (Terrasse Dufferin) is a historic boardwalk in Quebec City that wraps around the Château Frontenac, offering breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and surrounding areas. Inaugurated in 1879 and named after Governor General Lord Dufferin, the terrace has become a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike.Originally, the site was home to the St. Louis Fort, built by Samuel de Champlain in 1620, and later the residence of French and British governors for over 200 years. After a fire destroyed the governor's residence in 1834, Lord Durham erected the first public boardwalk in 1838, known as Durham Terrace. This initial structure was extended in 1854 and further expanded by Lord Dufferin in the 1870s, solidifying its place as a premier promenade.Today, Dufferin Terrace stretches approximately 430 meters (1,410 feet) along the cliffside, featuring six gazebos named after historical figures, benches, and monuments. Visitors can enjoy live entertainment, explore the ruins of the Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux beneath the terrace, or take a ride on the funicular to the Lower Town. In winter, the terrace transforms into a magical wonderland with a thrilling toboggan run.The terrace is open 24/7 year-round and is free to access.
