The Ring, or *L'Anneau* in French, is a prominent sculpture gracing the Esplanade Place Ville Marie (PVM) in the heart of downtown Montreal. This impressive art installation, designed by Claude Cormier + Associés, was unveiled in June 2022 as part of a CA$200 million revitalization project of Place Ville Marie.The Ring itself is a sight to behold. Constructed from over 23,000 kilograms (50,000 pounds) of stainless steel, it forms a perfect circle with a 30-meter (98 feet) diameter. The sculpture is suspended above a grand staircase that links the Esplanade to McGill College Avenue, creating a visually striking gateway. The Ring is heated to prevent snow buildup and equipped with vibration dampers to withstand high winds and earthquakes.The location of The Ring is significant. It frames a vista that encompasses over 200 years of Montreal's history, creating a visual connection between the Esplanade PVM, McGill University, and Mount Royal. In the evenings, the Ring's illumination mirrors that of the Mount Royal Cross, symbolizing the historic bond along this important downtown axis.Place Ville Marie, where The Ring is located, is a major office complex and shopping mall. It is directly connected to Montreal's Underground City and offers access to metro stations, bus routes, and train stations, making it easily accessible. The Esplanade PVM, where the Ring is located, has been renovated to improve pedestrian access and modernize the shopping mall.
